The future of software development will be in the tablet & in the cloud. There will be a fast trip toward a service provider economy: like hosting but for a large part of the services now vertically contained in every software house.

So a large part of the needs will be outsourced to these giant and scalable services, that won’t need all the developers out there now.

There will be a need for tablet developer or web developer for tablet and for webservices back-end developers.

Desktop will remain in Enterprise, but with a negative outlook: steady decline in numbers.

I was in you, I will bet on those skills: cloud service, webservice creation (a la Amazon) and tablet development.

One interesting property in the persistence.xml file of hibernate is: hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto

This is what the hibernate reference says about:

hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto

Automatically validates or exports schema DDL to the database when the
SessionFactory
is created. With
create-drop
, the database schema will be dropped when the
SessionFactory
is closed explicitly.e.g.
validate
|
update
|
create
|
create-drop

By the way, what dow this hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto property means? Well it means that whenever you start your application server, hibernate will check all your annotated classes (classes that have been annotated with the @Entity annotation) and will check that the corresponding tables exist in the database and behave like the parameter says: updating the schema, creating the table if it is not there or dropping and recreating the table.

Well, JSF is very ajax oriented. So you use a backing bean (a java class that back your jsf pages maintaining the state of attributes and executing the logic: well, the controller in the MVC pattern :D ) to store value that come from the page. Using jsf tags, you specify the backing bean and the attribute to be set, for example, at the click event in a group of radio button, before clicking on the Big Button to uhm let’s say download a file of a certain year.

Well if you do not put your jsf tags inside a h:form tag, your settings won’t go far. That’s because JSF needs that setting to operate.

So remeber:

<h:form>

<h:selectOneRadio value=”#{someBeanBB.yearSelected}”
id=”an-id” styleClass=”radio-button”
layout=”pageDirection”>
<f:selectItems id=”an-id-radio” itemLabel=”#{year}”
value=”#{someBeanBB.yearsToChooseFrom}” var=”year” />

</h:selectOneRadio>

</h:form>

is the way to go in JSF.

To start using reflection in java, first you have to obtain a reference to the object Class. Do it this way:

Class yourClassObject = YourClass.class //this way you ask a reference to your class type:

Ex. Class myCarClass = Car.class;

Now you can for exmple obtain the name of the class:

Ex. Class myCarClass = Car.class;

String myClassName = myCarClass.getSimpleName();

The name you obtain with getSimpleName() method is without the package name.

To obtain the whole package+class name use this method:

aClass.getName();

The difference between css style command display:none and visibility:hidden is that the first remove from the page rendering the element while it is still in the source code; the second just make it not visible while still make it occupy the needed space.

You can see a good example on w3school page here

An interesting piece of code I copied from their source (thanks for that!) is the code behind the Reset All button. It does call a function that reset the two image, after making them non visible using both method.

An interesting thing to see is that an element, to be see again, need to be set to display:block if it was set with display:hidden and visibility:visible if it was set with visibility:hidden. Look:

function resetElement()
{
document.getElementById(“imgbox1″).style.display=”block”;
document.getElementById(“imgbox2″).style.visibility=”visible”;
}

Bye

No free lunch for us

If when you don’t pay for a service (obtaining it for free) it does mean that you are the product being sold, we should interrogate ourselves and our societies on what we want to obtain when we are sold from such giants as Google and Facebook and others (like the Apple newcomer Siri).

Who want to obtain value from our personal information (selling them to other companies to make them improve their profit; or to other government’s agencies to let them spy on us) can’t just say “that’s how it works”. It is not.

Because as everything in our society, it’s just a political decision: and from political decisions laws are made. And are the laws that regulate the society we live in and, by the way, how and what a company can do with my private data.

But no free lunch for them

In the same way Telecoms are arguing on who has to pay for developing further data infrastructure, in the face of diminishing profits and growing costs in a market that they do not own anymore, we have to discuss the new rules of a changing society. But not only IF we want to share our private data, but also IF the price we receive is what we decide it’s fair. Maybe we want a bit more than Gmail and some Facebook Likes.

Give it back to us

What Facebook gives back to Telecom? What Google? Why, you could argue, they have to pay something back? But at the same time: why countries have to pay for this big companies to continue in their path with their ever growing data hunger, without significant contribution?

And more importantly: why people have to let companies decide by themselves the price of their data? I want more than Google Documents and Gmail for my data to be sold. The same for my Facebook information.

And what people do in a representative democracy to obtain something? They give the mandate to the Members of their elected Parliamens to negotiate or impose a revenue (call it a tax) which income have to benefit the society as a whole.

If the world is changing, changes are for everybody

You can say that they are already paying with standard taxes, but we want more. We deserve more. If privacy is changing and we have to fit the new paradigm, well the relation between taxation and privacy value need to change too. And they, the companies, have to fit.
